About Pixelmatrix Design
We’re an ultra-small web design company based out of Portland, OR, specializing in creating beautiful, innovative design that will create a better experience for your users and put you way ahead of the competition.
What we do
Pixelmatrix Design focuses on providing design services to next-generation web applications. We provide design comps, wireframes, and semantic XHTML & CSS for our clients. Our focus is not only on design elements, but also on the usability and functionality of your web application.
What we don’t do
Pixelmatrix Design has decided to focus solely on providing web design, and does not provide any logo/identity, print, icon, or branding services. It’s quite possible that a web design project will include such work, but we do not offer these services individually. We do not do any Flash, or back-end development work either.
How we work
Every project is different, so each project has a slightly different process. However, there are definitely some common steps that we generally follow for many of our projects:
- Wireframes / Conceptual
- This is one of the most exciting parts of any project. This is where we get to discuss the functionality of your application or website and actually plan how it’s going to work! We create loose wireframes or sketches to give us a plan for the rest of the project. At this point, sometimes (budget/time permitting) we can get early feedback from potential users about early usability issues.
- Design
- At this point we take our wireframes and actually create some visual mockups using Photoshop. This is the point where we start working on typography, colors, look and feel, etc. We design as many pages as needed to complete the application. Micro-mockups may be done as well for certain components of the UI that don't need a full mockup around it.
- Code
- Now that we’ve settled on a visual design that we love, it’s time to make it happen. We code the mockup into semantic XHTML and CSS, utilizing techniques such as progressive enhancement to ensure that users with newer browsers see additional features of the design, while not neccesarily excluding users with older browsers. We will also implement some Javascript (jQuery) if needed.
- Backend / CMS Integration
- Whoah, Not so fast! We can make your web application or website look great, but we can’t program the functionality. At this point it’s time to find another company to bring you the rest of the way. If needed, we can provide some recommendations for some companies that could take you the rest of the way.
- Rinse / Repeat
- We embrace iterations. The Japanese call it ‘kaizen’, or ‘continuous improvement’. Ideally we’ll do things great the first time, but there is always room for improvement. We love clients who share the same views, and are very interested in working with companies who are willing to work on continously making their product better. Whether we do iterations within each phase, or just continuously repeat our cycle, we believe this is the best way to make awesome design.
What people are saying
“I fear to recommend Josh, and his design firm Pixelmatrix Design, because it may lead to less time for Flyspy.
In all seriousness, Josh has been the best designer I've worked with in the past 15 years. He listens, he has a great sense of design and esthetics, he's timely, and he produces elegant and beautiful designs and code. And he has that rare multi-disciplined talent required to execute what he designs.
Josh truly believes that less is more. He crafts away until there is nothing more to remove, and only then does the true elegance of his design emerge.
I am a huge fan of Josh and would hire him at the drop of a pin.”
—Robert Metcalf, Flyspy
“The level of detail in Josh's work is incredible. Never ceases to amaze. Also one of the most professional and consistent designers I've worked with.”
—Ron Whitman, Zenji Web Design
