How Smart Folders Saved My Inbox

I wanted to share a little tip with my readers. Since most of my work is over the internet, I get a ton of mail every day. I have old emails that I can’t just delete because they are useful for reference in the future, and it takes a long time to go through all of these and process them. So basically, my inbox is clogged with hundreds (or maybe thousands… I lost track) of emails. Here’s what I did recently to solve the problem.

Before Leopard I never really looked into Smart Folders. Maybe it was the sidebar, or maybe I just didn’t think about it enough, but just after Leopard was released I finally realized a great way to use this feature.

I now have the following Smart Folders:

  • Today - Shows all of today’s mail
  • Yesterday - Shows all of the mail from yesterday
  • This Week - Shows me all the mail from this week
  • This Month - You get the picture by now right?
  • Flagged - Shows me all my mail that’s been flagged
  • Action - Shows me all my flagged mail that I haven’t replied to

Now I’m absolutely certain that i’m not the first person to think of this, but I wanted to pass along this little tip to all my readers and hopefully it will spark new ideas for you!

Hey, gotta tell you, great idea, never thought of it, and my email is reaching the point where this sort of management is becoming necessary. Thanks!

Great! i never thought of this either. how did you exclude sent or deleted items from the smart folders? I think my inbox just gave a sigh of relief.

@groovemonkey

There is an option that says “Include messages from Trash” and “Include messages from Sent.” Unchecking these items makes sure that you only have your messages from the inbox.

I also set a rule that says “Message is in Mailbox: Inbox”
